John
Wegner is an operatic baritone who has sung in many of
the worlds finest opera houses. In 1998 he performed Wotan/Wanderer
for State Opera of South Australia winning the 1999 'Opera
Performer of the Year' MO Award and in SOSA’s 2004
Ring cycle his performances of Alberich won him a Helpmann
Award. I saw him in the later and then heard him speak
to the Wagner Society of NSW, which is when this sketch
was made. He struck me as a very humble and caring person.
More
recently I saw him in New Zealand as Wotan in a concert
performance of Die Walkurie with the NZSO. He was unwell
and having issues with his voice and it was to his enormous
credit that he continued and sang this demanding role
despite his problems. I was so very impressed.
